  17. Well, SeaQuest DSV is actually more visible because it is a network show.

  19. But I bet fewer people watch SeaQuest than watch Babylon 5.

  21. We all know that these days a 1st run syndicated show can actually get 
  22. better ratings than a network show, at least in their own markets.  Not 
  23. sure about cumulative ratings since there must be some gaps with 1st run 
  24. distribution where the show is not aired.

  33. in the way of CGI modeling.

  36. These days its almost a given that if it's a sci-fi show, you might as 
  37. well go with the Toaster/lightwave.

  39. Babylon 5 paved the way with its pilot movie.

  41. Even Paramount has jumped on the bandwagon it seems.  Rumors indicate 
  42. that Voyager will break from the TNG/DS9 tradition and go all CGI, most 
  43. likely the Toaster.  SGI workstations are still too pricey for series 
  44. television, even for Spielberg and Paramount.  And I'm not sure SGI 
  45. workstations are really going to provide that much more.

  47. Toaster/Lightwave can generate NTSC resolution images at a fairly 
  48. productive rate.  Once you step up to film resolutions, SGIs become that 
  49. much more important.  You are talking a geometric increase in rendering 
  50. times.  If you have enough time on your hands, you could render a huge 
  51. chunk of NTSC animation on a pretty modest Amiga setup.  Babylon 5s 
  52. initial render farm was nothing but 2 Amiga 2000s networked together.

  56. Now, with that aside, for those of you who have or are planning on 
  57. getting the standalone Lightwave for their Amiga.  I've looked into it 
  58. and at face value, $500 for a commercial grade raytrace animation system 
  59. sounds like a great bargain.  But if you ever plan on sending output to 
  60. videotape in a clear resolution, it's gonna be costly.  SO costly in fact 
  61. that it almost makes sense to go ahead and get the full Toaster board setup.
  62.  
  63. Let me be more specific.  The AGA Amigas have what I consider to be very 
  64. wonderful graphics which are perfectly suitable for sending directly to 
  65. video via a genlock.  HAM8, when done RIGHT, can look just as good as 
  66. 24-bits.  For most applications, the limitations of HAM8 do not rear 
  67. their head.  Certainly for the limited palette of Lightwave's most common 
  68. subjectmatter, space battles, this would probably not be a problem.

  70. You'd save the frames as .IFF 24s and do a GOOD conversion to HAM8 to
  71. optimize palette usage for each frame.  But the problem now is HOW do you
  72. send this to video?  There is no way to drive it at 30fps.  This means
  73. using a single frame-capable VCR which is no cheaper than $1000 and
  74. probably more, or you could forsake HAM8 and use DCTV so you can play
  75. animations at full speed.  I have yet to see DCTV output but supposedly it
  76. is pretty good.  HOWEVER, since it outputs composite only (right?) the
  77. signal will be fuzzy because of this.  Using an S-VHS or what not will not
  78. make any difference.

  80. So if you can find a cheap enough deck that can do single framing, you 
  81. are all set.  That and a cheap external GENLOCK and you can even use an 
  82. A1200 w/HAM8 and probably get some amazing results.  If the Genlock 
  83. outputs split video then you can output to SVHS which has greater 
  84. horizontal resolution than standard VHS.  They also have these new Hi-8 
  85. VCRs believe it or not.  But I don't know what these have for single 
  86. frame capabilities.  But they have great sound characteristics and at 
  87. least 400 lines horizontal resolution capacity.  These go for like 
  88. $500-$600 I believe.

  90. I've seen some U-matic 3/4 decks floating around used, which I have to 
  91. assume have fairly good resolution statistics.  But kinda poor sound.  I 
  92. don't know what they have for video inputs nor do I know exactly how they 
  93. might handle single framing.  But these can be quite affordable used.

  95. The only other options are the Personal Animation Recorder and Vlab and 
  96. stuff, things which require a Zorro slot (thus invalidating usage of a 
  97. cheap A1200 or other non-Zorro Amy) or is way too expensive to consider 
  98. (Abekas tape output).
